Designed to offer high school students a chance to explore racing at the track rather than on the street — and to have fun while doing so — Summit Motorsports Park began offering its annual High School Nationals twenty-six years ago for students in ninth through twelfth grades behind the wheel of their daily-driven cars, and now, generated from interest, a separate alumni class will be offered for high school alumni.
In years past, there have been as many as 750 cars and 2,000 spectators at the event, which also boasts the Jostens Smokey Burnout, Car-Cram and Ugliest Working Wreck contests.
In addition, NHRA Top Fuel driver Terry McMillen will talk with those gathered throughout the day about his Top Fuel dragster, which will be on the premises, as well as his road to racing.
Gates open for the highly anticipated event at 8 a.m. on Sunday, May 4, with time-trials beginning at 8:30 a.m. A race for instructors will be 11:30 a.m. followed by a pre-race ceremony at 1:30 p.m. and eliminations at 2 p.m. The winner, runner-up and semifinalists of the newly created alumni class will receive trophies.
The cost for admission and to race in the Alumni Class is just $10. Summit Motorsports Park is at 1300 State Route 18, Norwalk, Ohio.
