This past weekend, three teams of ten (Red, White and Blue) left Ohio on a mission to make their mark at this year’s NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League Eastern Conference Finals presented by ViperizerRacing.com in Bristol, TN. And that…they did!
It all started in the first round of eliminations when two of our young racers were recognized and awarded with a trophy for running the closest to their dial-in their age division/class. The Red Teams gets all the accolades for this award, as both racers were members of the Red Team. Aubrey Collins (10yrs) ran 9.102 on her 9.10 DI while Courtney Grisez (12yrs) ran an 8.903 on an 8.90 DI. When the dust settled at the end of first round, seventeen (17) out of thirty (30) Summit Motorsports Park racers advanced into the second round.
Each round the competition got a little bit tougher, but the kids continued to fight on. Going into the quarter-final round, Thomas Summers (15 yrs), Owen Hoover (15 yrs), Kyle Beno (12 yrs), Sadie Anderson (12 yrs) and Zack Gill (11 yrs) representing each of our three teams (Red, White and Blue) still remained in competition. However, only Owen “O Show” Hoover was able to advance into the finals.
Owen’s final battle of the night was not going to be an easy one, as he met up with Sydney Coleman (from Elkton, MD representing Cecil County Dragway), who had previously won this event in her age division in 2010. But Owen was able to deny Sydney of a second championship. Owen cut a better light against Sydney and took the stripe by .01! (Owen Hoover DI 7.94, RT .017 and ET 7.957 vs. Sydney Coleman DI 7.94, RT .030 and ET 7.948) Owen will be recognized for his Eastern Conference Finals win at the North Central Eastern Conference Finals Divisional banquet, which will be held in December in Indianapolis, IN.
The Red, White and Blue Teams were very competitive. At one point all three teams were in the top three for the team championship chase! By the end of the event, the White Team, Showtime Dragstrip and Atco Raceway Team #1 tied for third with 27 points. Huntsville Dragway Team 1 and Atlanta Dragway Team 1 finished the event tied with 29 points. It took two tiebreakers to determine the overall champion with the title going to Huntsville by the narrowest of margins. There were twenty-six teams having at least twenty points making it one of the tightest team championships battles in recent years!
