Al Hanna talks about progress on the Queen of Diamonds II. We can't wait!
NORWALK, Ohio – What courage would it take to strap yourself into an experimental, state-of-the-art Jet Dragster?
Nobody ever built a Jet Dragster like the Hanna Motorsports Queen of Diamonds II.
It’s designed for speed – more than 300 mph speed.
The driver, tiny Jill Canuso from Pottstown, Pa., straps into a pod on the left side. A fuel tank offsets on the right side.
In the middle presides one huge jet engine, gulping air and kicking out flames in a power thrust whoosh!
Unless a tow vehicle straps to the front, this craft can’t putz down the track.
Would you strap yourself in?
How about your best friend?
Al and Ellen Hanna, owners of Hanna Motorsports, created the racing team that specializes in Jet Cars by mixing ingenuity with track experience, limited money and time, and graciousness of sponsors such as GOJO.
The beginnings of the Queen of Diamonds II arrived humbly, quietly.
While waiting on a flight in an airport, racing legend Al Hanna traced out an idea on a napkin. Then Al Hanna thought through the concept and talked it over with engineers and builders for about eight years before committing to the project.
Hoping to retire the Queen of Diamonds and race only the Queen of Diamonds II in 2013, Al Hanna realized several weeks ago the schedule must change to make room for tweaks and adjustments.
“We’re trying to get the new one done,” Al Hanna said. “That’s a tremendous amount of work.”
Every detail must be perfect.
“It’s at our shop finally,” Al Hanna said. “My son Rich has been working on it every waking minute. We can’t rush it. It’s something that’s never been done before.”
The Queen of Diamonds II will not debut at the Mickey Mart Rewards Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser, part of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and the Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series May 17-19, 2013 at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. Al Hanna described the journey to completion as he saw it.
Cavalcade was the goal, Al Hanna said. “But we have to finish assembling it and we have to test it. It’s a phenomenal project.
“The windshield is out being made right now,” Al Hanna said. “It’s a flip canopy. It’s one of a kind. Nobody has ever done it before.”
On Facebook.com, Rich Hanna shares photographs of the Queen of Diamonds II, and describes the work.
“We’re just trying so hard,” Al Hanna said. “All I can tell you is: It’s every living moment of everyone on our team. But I won’t sacrifice safety. It still has to be tested. It’s all we can do.”
So Jill Canuso lines up in the familiar Queen of Diamonds, and she set her heart on racing at the Mickey Mart Rewards Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser. For event information click on: That’s always a great show!
Because the 2013 season celebrates fifty years of fun at Summit Motorsports Park, we recommend buying tickets and lodging in advance.
The Mickey Mart Rewards Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser features three shows: At 6 p.m. Friday, 3:30 p.m. Saturday, and 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
We invited the legendary Bob Motz to all three shows, along with his wheel-walking, 200 mph, flame snorting Jet Kenworth.
Get this: Sixteen 260 mph exotic, erratic Funny Cars, and sixteen 280 mph screaming dragsters.
Another most-appreciated debut this year rumbles to the tree as the new Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series featuring Nitro Harleys!
To top the evening on Friday and Saturday, Bader Family Signature Fireworks add sparkle, color and boom! You know what those fireworks are for: Sit back in your grandstand seat, pull your loved ones close and enjoy the view!
