David Davis bags the only big check of the 2013 Ten Grand Nationals!
NORWALK,Ohio – Excited and happy even after an icy splash in the Winner's Circle, David Davis celebrated following the Sunday race of the Ten Grand Nationals presented by Fleenor Transmissions August 30-Sept. 1, 2013 at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.
“You are a Ten Grand Nationals Champion,” said Ron Huntley, an announcer at Summit Motorsports Park. “Not very many people can say that.”
On Friday about 2:30 a.m., rain after the third round split the remaining purse by more than 100 racers. About the same time in the morning on Saturday, the final four scurried to the pits in a downpour.
David Davis enjoyed a measure of local track success before this Ten Grand Nationals victory.
“It's the first big check,” said David Davis, Columbus, Ohio, recalling the struggles of going rounds on Sunday.
“The transmission's been broken since third round,” David Davis said. “I shouldn't say broke. It's been making noise. It's been clunking real good.”
Shooting up from the ranks of Bear Motorsports Junior Dragsters presented by Wiseco, David Davis bagged the top prize of the weekend after a handful of attempts at the Ten Grander.
“I ran four or five of these,” said David Davis, who works at Spartan Logistics in Columbus, Ohio. “I was runner-up in 2011. I lost to Dennis Meade last year.”
Other successes include a runner up in the 2012 Super 64, which is a runoff of the 64 top season points earners in the Mr. Gasket $53,100 Super Series, and a National Hot Rod Association Wally trophy in the 2012 King of the Track.
David Davis plans some clunk removal on his winning steed, a black 1998 S&W dragster, before Saturday and a Mr. Gasket $53,100 Super Series contest.
“Fix the car, and then hit the next race.”
Dan Hageman II, Canfield, Ohio, collected the runner-up in his plum 1981 Camaro after a red light by -0.006 second in the final round. He thanked his friends for the tour of rounds in his fifth attempt at the Ten Grand Nationals presented by Fleenor Transmissions.
“We beat a lot of good drivers,” Dan Hageman II said. “I can't complain a bit about it. It was a fun experience. Good deal!”
A mechanic machinist at City Machine Technologies, CMT, Dan Hageman II first nudged up to a tree 14 years ago.
“I ran Juniors for four years,” Dan Hageman II said. “I've been running big cars for 10 years now.”
His 1981 Camaro sports a 598 big block Chevy.
“I just built it two years ago,” Dan Hageman II said. “I completely stripped the car and updated the chassis.”
The semi finals brought three to the feast. Based on a 0.007-second reaction time in the quarter finals, David Davis appreciated a bye.
Roy St. Dennis, Oxford, Mich., lined up in a sleek black 1984 Thunderbird and rounded out the trio, falling to Dan Hageman II on a red light by -0.002 second.
Racing for 22 years, Roy St. Dennis said his Thunderbird rumbles with a 468 cu. in. motor.
“I've had it since '98,” Roy St. Dennis said. “It's part of the family now. Basically it's a full tube chassis car with nitrous. It runs on racing methanol.”
In a sharply raced quarter-final round, Roy St. Dennis narrowly bested Chris Cadle, Brownstown, Mich., a painter at Todd's Extreme Paint, Milan, Mich.
Chris Cadle painted his own purple 2011 Diamond dragster with blue and black checks, and yellow, orange and pink rips.
Meanwhile, David Davis claimed a double breakout quarter final by a margin of 0.002 second over Shay Fisher, Fair Chance, Pa., a truck driver who pilots a silver 1996 Mustang Cobra he's owned for four years.
“I've been racing 18 years,” said Shay Fisher, who displays kingofthestreets.org on his hot rod. “Been at this event for the last three to four years.”
Also in the quarter finals, Dan Hageman II met up with Chris Schneider, 23, Cleveland, a sales representative for Stainless Works. The 2006 American Race Cars dragster with yellow flames on the front, gray on top and purple accents, jumped off the tree red by -0.011 second.
“I've had this car since 2006,” Chris Schneider said. “I've been racing since I was eight. I started in a Junior in Michigan. This is our local track. We race IHRA and NHRA, too. So if we don't have another race, we race here.
“We've been coming to the Ten Grand Nationals since 2006.”
Ten grand and an icy splash sounds like fun, doesn't it?
The 2013 season at Summit Motorsports Park rounds out with three more Mr. Gasket $53,100 Super Series races; the Monster Mopar World Finals Sept. 13-15; the Summit Racing Equipment Shakedown at the Summit presented by Mickey Thompson Performance Oct. 4-6; a Classic Warmup Oct. 12; and the Quick Fuel Technology Halloween Classic presented by Harland Sharp, including the 2013 Super 64, Oct. 20-27.
