Great racing families fill the pits ready for roar!
NORWALK, Ohio – Every year for almost fifty years, Bill and Mary Ann Jackson lined up to race at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.
Can anyone else say that?
The Mansfield, Ohio couple arrived Wednesday with their two red “Scratcher” Super Comp dragsters and their “Scratcher” Monza for the Mickey Mart Rewards Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser May 17-19, 2013 at Summit Motorsports Park.
Watch for them.
Their sons Ron Foss and Rob Foss race, too. And their son Nitro Joe Jackson, who provides racing statistics for NHRA and IHRA, also joined the party in the pits.
We recommend getting acquainted with racing families such as the Jacksons. Have those fun folks got the stories to tell!
And since Mary Ann and Bill Jackson race against each other in the Super Comp class, which one will you cheer for?
Remember your ticket in the gate provides free access to the pits. Watch crews tear down and rebuild engines in minutes. Take photos. Create memories.
Special autograph sessions begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. on Sunday. If you bring a Sharpie pen, the racing stars will autograph your shirt, jacket, hat or a HERO card!
These fast people love to meet fans, and answer questions about their amazing machines.
Also, on both sides of the racetrack, we packed our midways with so many food vendors, we’re sure you’ll find your favorite!
Have you visited the Quarter Mile Clothing Company lately? Since 2013 rolled out the Golden Anniversary season of Summit Motorsports Park, we super stocked the store with shirts, hats, mugs, cereal bowls, plush Delberts, toy dragsters and many more great gifts to honor fifty years of fun!
We even returned Norwalk Dragway T-shirts, in blue, tan, military green and red. Whatever happened to your favorite old T-shirt, anyway? Maybe it’s time to break in a new one. Think of all the fun you’ll have!
Next door to the store for a scrumptious treat, check out Wild Willy’s Ice Cream Saloon on the Budweiser midway. It’s known coast to coast: We serve one pound of delicious Velvet ice cream for a buck!
Of course we’re here to race! Time trials and qualifying begin at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. We’ll crown winners in each class on Championship Sunday.
But Friday and Saturday feature races within the race, so be sure to find a great seat in the grandstands before the prerace ceremonies at 6 p.m. Friday, 3:30 p.m. Saturday, and 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
You won’t want to miss a thing!
For example, on Friday the prerace ceremony begins at 6 p.m., followed by a specialty race, the DRAW and Racers For Christ Super Shootouts presented by Moser Engineering.
Next, we’ll sizzle the track with 280 mph Top Alcohol Dragsters, 260 mph Top Alcohol Funny Cars and Nitro Harley Qualifying!
Then, SHOWTIME! Presented by Croghan Colonial Bank, involves five fabulous fans chosen at random to be judges to preside over the Stock Eliminator and Super Stock Eliminator qualifying rounds, which include categories such as Fan Favorite, Highest Wheelstand, Longest Wheelstand, Fastest, and Quickest Elapsed Time.
About 9 p.m. we’re sending more fire show at you! How do Pro Stock Snowmobiles sound? No snow; no kidding! They scream down pavement, too!
Then Jill Canuso heats the night in the Hanna Motorsports 300 mph Queen of Diamonds Jet Dragster.
We couldn’t allow the show to be too easy. So we invited Scott Holdridge and the Black Ice Jet Dragster to race against Jill Canuso. Can the old Queen of Diamonds hold her own against a new challenger?
One man closes out the show: the legendary Bob Motz and his wheel-walking, flame snorting, 200 mph Jet Kenworth semi truck! He’s an old favorite. Let him hear you cheer!
It’s the Golden Anniversary season of Summit Motorsports Park, so in 2013 we’re celebrating fifty years of fun all year. Part of that means Bader Family Signature Fireworks. You know what those are for: Sit back in your grandstand seat, pull your loved ones close and enjoy the view!
Because you’re celebrating with us, our fireworks are extra special this year. We hope you enjoy them!
On Saturday, Racers for Christ invites children up to age seven to a pedal car race about 1 p.m. near the Chalet Village on the Summit Side of the race track.
Children of all ages also are welcome to try their hand at crafts, corn hole toss, and Bible verses from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday in basically the same area.
After the 3:30 p.m. prerace ceremonies on Saturday, we’ll enjoy two qualifying sessions of Top Alcohol Funny Cars, Top Alcohol Dragsters and Nitro Harleys.
The Pro Stock Snowmobiles, Jet Dragsters and Jet Kenworth blaze trails in two shows on Saturday, about 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.
In between those shows are round one eliminations of Super Stock and Super Comp. Check out the Jacksons and their racing friends there!
Then Wiseco sponsors a special Fast Four race for the Top Dragster and Top Sportsman classes. Cheer for your quickest favorites!
After the second jet show round, we’re lighting the night with Bader Family Signature Fireworks again on Saturday! Feel the wonder and closeness. Enjoy the colors, the spectacle, the boom!
Have you ever attended church at a dragstrip?
Racers for Christ invites all to worship at 7:30 a.m. or at 9 a.m. on Sunday in the Media Center.
Championship Sunday racing begins at 8:30 a.m. with Super Street eliminations.
The Sunday prerace ceremonies kick off at 12:30 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. show round.
And not all of the racing classes are mentioned in this story.
The new NHRA Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series features six classes: Top Fuel, Pro Gas, Draggin’ Bagger, Street Pro, Hot Street, and Pro Dragster. Find out how fast these people go on a motorcycle!
