NORWALK, Ohio – Born between two brothers, I’ve seen battles, many and bitter.
So maybe for that reason the banter among pros in the National Hot Rod Association lights my heart with extra delight.
This week after the fourth race in the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, the NHRA and pro team Websites posted tell-tale quotes of the battles among the brotherhood – and sisterhood – of racers.
I love it!
For example, in 2012 Antron Brown won his first Top Fuel NHRA Season Championship by a nudge over highly decorated Don Schumacher Racing teammate Tony Schumacher.
On Sunday, April 7, 2013 the Top Fuel final round pitted Antron Brown against Tony Schumacher.
“When you get in that final round and you get to go up against Tony, that’s all you can ask for,” Antron Brown said. “The DSR cars got the cake today, because we both made it to the final. He got the icing though. We love the icing, and he got it from us this time. Next time, we are going to make sure that we’re the ones with the icing and the cherry.”
I can just imagine how the cake, icing and cherry will be delivered in the Don Schumacher Racing pits at the next race, can’t you?
By the way, Tony Schumacher owns first place in NHRA points with a 14-point lead over Antron Brown. Their DSR teammate, Spencer Massey, lines up in distant third.

Also in the Top Fuel battles, rookie Brittany Force savors her first round win as a pro, which, according to the John Force Racing Website, includes a dragster-full of other firsts:
“It not only was Brittany’s first round win since turning pro, it was the first round win for John Force Racing, Inc., in a pro category other than Funny Car; It was the first round win by a Ford-powered dragster since 1970; and it was the first round win for a Team Castrol Top Fuel car since Pat Austin beat the late Blaine Johnson in the second round at Topeka, Kan., on Oct. 1, 1995.”
Round two, Brittany Force lined up against the top man in the sport.
“I went out there second round against Tony Schumacher, who I’ve been wanting to run for a while just because he’s Tony Schumacher,” Brittany Force said.
His comment showed motivation.
“She has a long good career ahead of her,” Tony Schumacher said. “She will be tough to beat. I just didn’t want to be her second round win.”

Did Brittany’s and Courtney’s father, John Force, realize what he unleashed when he sat Courtney in a Funny Car?
Cruz Pedregon, the winner of the final Funny Car round against Courtney Force, eyes her top spot from third place and 17 points back.
In an NHRA article, Cruz Pedregon admitted Courtney Force made him nervous at the line. However his quote after the run reveals an artistry of racing a Funny Car.
“We had to pull back a little bit,” Cruz Pedregon said. “We just raced the track and we were smart. You live and learn. Even though I am in love with the big numbers and setting records and low E.T., sometimes you have to take what you can get and race within yourself and that’s what we did today.”
